Collective preservation through improved quality of life for residents in the Hwange region
The Projects Committee of the Association for Tourism Hwange (ATH) exists to turn ideas into action. Every path we improve, every community program we support and every conservation effort we champion is about creating lasting change for both people and wildlife. Our role is to identify what matters most for Hwange’s future, whether it’s better facilities for visitors, stronger opportunities for local communities or safeguarding the landscapes we all depend on, and make it happen. By working closely with partners and stakeholders, the committee ensures that each project is not only practical and sustainable, but also deeply rooted in the values of care, responsibility and shared growth.
Our Objectives include focusing on citizen science, and waste management to address specific community needs; creating more jobs in our communities; showcasing and promoting artisans and entrepreneurs in the Hwange region; improving the quality of life for residents of the Hwange region; increasing citizen science in the Hwange Region.

Gobelo Farm
Founded by Elisabeth Valerio in 2020, Gobelo Farm in Dete has grown into a living classroom for sustainable farming. On 5 acres, it demonstrates how agriculture can thrive near wildlife, producing vegetables, herbs, fruits and medicinal plants while raising livestock that support soil health. Visitors, students, tourists, and locals learn about composting, natural fertilisers, and indigenous botanicals, while enjoying farm-to-table produce served in local restaurants. Beyond farming, Gobelo develops value-added products like cheeses, wellness items, and beverages. With 20% of farm tour revenue reinvested into the community, Gobelo is both a conservation initiative and a model for turning rural farming into profitable, innovative enterprises.
Dave’s Tree Nursery
Spearheaded by Dave and Linda Bennet at Hwange Safari Lodge, this nursery focuses on reforestation and habitat restoration. By cultivating indigenous tree species, the project supports both biodiversity and local communities, while also creating educational opportunities for schools and visitors.
Rocket Stoves
Led by Forgie Wilson in Dete, this project is tackling deforestation by promoting the use of efficient rocket stoves. The aim is for every household to own either a two-plate or dual single-plate stove, reducing reliance on firewood. Camps, lodges and hotels are encouraged to provide stoves for their staff, and efforts are underway to secure NGO subsidies to scale distribution.
Plastic Recycling
Launched in January 2025 and led by Linda Bennet at Hwange Safari Lodge, this initiative transforms plastic waste into usable products, helping reduce pollution across the Hwange region. It is supported by partners like Ele-Collection, making it both a conservation and community-driven effort.
Mares Donkey Project
Led by Claire Einhorn and Chris Epona in Mabale, this project improves the welfare of working donkeys through vaccinations and better harness-making. It benefits both the local community who depend on donkeys for transport and livelihoods and tourists who learn about the importance of animal care in rural life.
The Projects Committee is part of a broader community of Tourism Operators in Hwange whose mission is to showcase and protect the integrity of all national parks in the Hwange region including the surrounding ecosystems, ecology, water bodies, cultural sites and communities.
