Hwange airport takes flight

When we think about Hwange, our minds immediately go to the deep Kalahari sands, the ancient teak forests, and the large elephant herds congregating around the pumped pans. But behind the scenes, a different kind of infrastructure is quietly aligning to change how travelers experience this world-class wilderness.

On May 14, 2026, the Association for Tourism Hwange (ATH) attended a meeting with the Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ). The takeaway was clear: Hwange National Airport is fully functional, open for business, and undergoing a massive operational transformation. Now, the ball is firmly in the court of our tourism operators and travel agents to drive the business boom this infrastructure deserves. A major theme of the ACZ meeting was elevating Hwange National Airport to strict national and international standards, clearly separating "land side" public areas from the secure "airside" operations. Security and safety are receiving immediate, high-priority upgrades:

  • The Perimeter & Runway Protection: To keep our world-famous wildlife safe and ensure flawless landings, ACZ has awarded a tender for a high-spec Electrical Game Fence. This perimeter fence will mirror the exact security infrastructure used at Victoria Falls Airport, prioritizing both runway safety and asset protection.

  • Aviation Safety Training: Starting this June and July, mandatory annual training covering Fire, Security, and Airside Awareness will commence to ensure local personnel remain elite handlers.

  • Emergency Readiness: A new, dedicated fire tender is scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2026, navigating the standard procurement pipelines to ensure the airport meets top-tier emergency response tiers. Simultaneously, a newly serviced backup generator will be permanently transferred to Hwange by the end of the third quarter.

The modern traveler demands sustainability, and Hwange National Airport is pivoting away from traditional grid reliance to become an eco-friendly hub.

  • The 30KV Solar Shift: In a massive move toward green energy, a solar installation tender has been officially awarded. The contractor has already completed initial onsite assessments for a 30KV solar system. This will eliminate reliance on the national grid (ZESA)-which recently replaced the airport's main transformer to stabilize power in the interim.

  • Independent Water Reticulation: New boreholes have been successfully installed and are fully operational. To guarantee absolute safety, the Ministry of Health will periodically test the borehole water, with ZINWA retained as a reliable secondary backup.

  • Flawless Airfield Maintenance: Immaculate runways are essential. While the airport’s older tractors are undergoing routine maintenance, partnerships are moving the needle forward. Operators are looking to secure a tractor from RGI, and Victoria Falls Airport will likely lend a tractor for two months to accelerate grass cutting. A massive thank you goes out to Ama Linda for their relentless, hands-on efforts in keeping the airfield pristine, with supplementary infrastructure upkeep assistance being volunteered by Zimbabwe Prisons.

Let’s address the most critical point raised at the meeting: Hwange National Airport is functional, secure, and ready but it needs traffic. While the airport currently operates primarily on weekdays, ACZ explicitly stated that weekend operations are fully available. Operators simply need to notify ACZ to facilitate seamless weekend arrivals and departures. Furthermore, a nationwide contractor has been secured to install high-speed Wi-Fi gadgets across the terminal, ensuring your guests stay connected the moment they touch down.

Infrastructure development always faces budget hurdles, but the physical foundation is here. The runway is clear, the power is stabilizing, the water is flowing, and the security is tightening.

Our travel agents and operators are the true ambassadors of transport for this region. The safari doesn’t have to begin with a long, exhausting road transfer. It can begin with a smooth, panoramic flight straight into the heart of the elephant kingdom. The infrastructure is ready. The sky is open. Let’s bring the business home.
